Have you ever wished that you had an easy way to raise awareness about Black Dog Syndrome? Kim in California sent us this fantastic, easy idea that anyone can use to tell others about the plight of black shelter dogs. She graciously gave us permission to share it with our website readers. Kim uses the cards pictured above which she orders from Vistaprint.com. If you order 250 cards, the cards are FREE. You just pay for shipping and they don't gouge you on the charges.
Kim leaves these cards everywhere; on restaurant tables with her tip; at the gas pump after she fills up; she hands them out when walking her dog and she even tacks them to bulletin boards wherever she finds them.
We love Kim's idea so much that we're creating our own cards with the startseeingblaackdogs.com website on one side. Kim stresses that anyone is welcome to use this design or the card copy to make their own version. Her goal is to raise awareness and increase adoptions. A woman after our own heart!

Thanks to Mike Fry and Beth Nelson, hosts of Animal Wise Radio for inviting us on the show. The black dogs are coming – join us for our weekly Black Dog Walk around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis this Sunday, August 17 at 10:30. We walk EVERY WEEK, MAY THROUGH OCTOBER. Sniffing, socializing and the occasional dip in the lake are encouraged. We're referring to the dogs, of course. :)
COMING SOON: We are finalizing details for a winter space in the Linden Hills / Edina area where we can continue to have a Black Dog Play Group during the colder winter months. More on that next week!
WHO: Anyone with one or more black dogs. ***Foster dogs are encouraged to join us. We are stopped every week by passers by who want to meet the dogs, so this is great exposure for dogs awaiting adoption.
WHAT: A casual walk with our black dogs around Lake Harriet, or as far as you want to go. Those who want can return to the Linden Hills Dunn Brothers patio for social time after the walk. Owners Carrie and Brian Ehlers are dog lovers and welcome our group.
WHERE: Meet in front of the Linden Hills Dunn Brothers Coffee, and we’ll walk to the lake from there. 2814 West 43rd Street, Linden Hills, 55410, (612) 925-5669. PLEASE PARK AROUND THE CORNER FROM DUNN BROTHERS SO WE DON'T MONOPOLIZE THE PARKING WHILE WE GO ON OUR WALK. THEIR PARKING LOT IS NOT LARGE :) For a map and directions go to:
http://www.dunnbros.com/locate_results. ... tion_id=8#
WHEN: This Sunday August 17th, 10:30 a.m.
WHY: Black dogs are often the last to be adopted and are euthanised in much larger numbers than other dogs. They are frequently overlooked because potential adopters may consider them too "plain," think that they appear more menacing, or they simply may not see them because their darker color makes them disappear in their kennels. Those involved in animal rescue refer to this as “Black Dog Syndrome.” We want black dogs to become more visible and a little black dog herd marching around the lake is a step in the right direction.

The Black Dog Bowlers, left to right: Kathryn, myself, Steffin, Kathleen, Jon.
The first annual "Pins for Pets" bowl for the fix was a big success. The black dog bowlers had a great time bowling, raised some money to pay for shelter pet spay / neuter and bowled a pretty respectable game. The nice folks from Animal Ark let me check out the inside of their new "Neuter Commuter" a mobile spay/neuter Winnebago type rig that is taking it to the streets. We may be on Animal Ark's "Animal Wise" radio show to talk about black dogs an our website -more on that later.
Chuck and Don's were huge sponsors, and Chuck himself was there to give away donated prizes during the event. A very nice man and a very nice chain of pet supply stores. I have to give them a plug here people, because they keep it local, and really supported this event 110%. Thanks Chuck and Don's for caring about shelter animals enough to participate in such a huge way! Ditto FM107 and Katie K-9 who did a broadcast live from the event. I finally met Katie who said she'd like to have Start Seeing Black Dogs on the Show. Details on that to come.
It was wonderful to meet so many fantastic people involved in local rescue groups and to see the fabulous turn out for this important fundraiser. We'll definitely be there next year, rolling gutter balls (me) and some strikes for black shelter dogs everywhere. I'll post the total fundraiser tally when I get those numbers.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE A DONATION TO OUR BLACK DOG BOWLING TEAM. Your support was very touching and goes directly to local spay/neuter efforts. WE LOVE OUR SUPPORTERS- THANK YOU!
