Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar
If we had a coffee and wine bar, chances are pretty good that this is what we’d name it. Owner Andy Remke and his co-owner siblings Sara and Stacy have created a hip oasis in the heart of the Lowertown district, and rumor has it one of them actually owns a black dog. Their great food, funky art and classy old brick and beam space are not a rumor – thankfully they are a reality. Check out their Tango Nights, Annual Block Party and other events to spice up your St. Paul nights.
Downtown Dogs
Give Anne and the crew a call for your doggie daycare and boarding needs. What black dog (or dog of any hue) wouldn’t love their 15,000 square feet of playtime doggie heaven? If your dog does not give you the crazy eye at the prospect of playing with other pups, private human attention is also available. Every dog mom and dad will love the Live Web Cam where you can watch your dogs at play. I dare you to get any work done if you have this minimized on your computer. Owner Anne Hendrickson is also the proud mom of three black dogs – like we needed more reasons to love them!
Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge
One look at Psycho Suzi’s web page and you realize you’ve stumbled into a separate universe that is part tiki island paradise, part motorcycle hangout and 100% Nordeast’ Minneapolis. The early spring weeknight that we had our photo shoot on their patio, the place couldn’t have been more packed. Our poor dog model was so distracted; it took leftover pizza crusts from some kind hearted diners to help her focus. Thanks Psycho Suzi’s for helping out the black dog cause!
Depot Coffee
Could a coffee shop planned and opened by area students to create a chemically-free environment for teens located in a refurbished brick train depot building get any cooler? It can, and does, when that building is just a few yards away from one of the best city bike trails in Minneapolis. I heard a rumor that they'd like to welcome more trail riders and their dogs, so get out the bike and the leash and head down to the Depot.h3>
Fast and Furless
Vegan or not, the beautiful shoes and bags at Fast and Furless should woo you. This gorgeous, simple, sweet boutique on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis is the only one of it’s kind in the Twin Cities. Filled with unique, lovely and fun items – all of which are cruelty free – Fast and Furless is a vegan dream come true. Owner Jon Novick has done Twin Cities residents a great service by bringing these products to our area. Thanks Jon for supporting our website! |
Jennifer VanKempen, Floating World Photography
Looking a unique photo of your beloved pet? How about something beyond the traditional studio shots? Local photographer Jennifer VanKempen specializes in one of a kind Pet Portraits with a modern twist. She is also the photographic mastermind behind the images on the startseeingblackdogs.com website. Black dog owners, take note: Jennifer's other specialty is photographing black dogs whose facial expressions often prove much harder to capture because of their darker color. Or if your planning a wedding or special event, Jennifer's calm demeanor and creative talent will help make your important day a stress free success. After shooting 30+ active black dogs for our website in just one month, she remained consistently creative and completely unflappable. Just the kind of photographer you want on your side for that big event, or to capture you're pet's personality for that special portrait. |

Stray Dog Arts – Jessie Marianiello
These aren’t your typical pet portraits. For artists Jessie Marianiello, it’s all about capturing your dog’s individual personality in every work of art. While the darker color of black dogs makes them harder to photograph, this doesn’t present a problem for Marianiello. Skilled at painting darker colored dogs, her pictures depict nuances that photographs often can’t hope to capture. Offering commissioned portraits in a unique and contemporary style, Marianiello’s paintings are a heartfelt gesture celebrating the unconditional love and infinite happiness that our four-legged friends have brought to us. Her paintings tell a story – the story of your one-of-a-kind dog.
